Nursing Grants

nursing grantsThere is always a need for more nurses. The aging population has made it even more crucial to attract young people to the nursing profession. Training can take place in nursing schools or Bachelor’s Degree RN programs. Either way it can be expensive to fund a nursing education. That’s why nursing grants can make such a difference to someone who wants to enter the field of nursing.

Federal Grants

Nursing students can apply for financial aid through the U.S. Department of Education’s financial aid programs. They are offered through the Federal Student Aid Department. Programs provide money that can be used as nursing grants.

If you wish to find out if you qualify for any of the programs,  you must fill out the Federal Aid for Financial Student Aid (FAFSA) form which asks questions about your household income. You can access FAFSA online and at financial aid offices.

The first program to consider is the Federal Pell Grant. This grant provides a maximum of $5500 a year with a maximum of 12 semesters. You must check to see if your nursing program qualifies as a participating Pell Grant school. Pell Grants are open to U.S. citizens with a social security number who are not incarcerated or under involuntary civil commitment. Applicants must not have a history of defaulted loans. Male applicants must be registered with Selective Service.

Another grant you may qualify for after completing the FAFSA is the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG). It is a supplement to the Pell Grant to provide additional financial support up to $4000 and also based on the FAFSA.

In addition to using the Pell Grant and FSEOG for nursing grants, you may be eligible for a student loan. The Stafford Loan Program includes both subsidized and unsubsidized federal loans for school.

Most students in search of nursing grants will be able to take advantage of the loan program, regardless of your credit profile. These loans are different than standard loans as they have a low interest rate. Some loans have a rate lower than 3.5%.

Another benefit of the Stafford Loan Program is that you don’t have to start making payments until you graduate from nursing school. You can even defer payment in some instances. Some people will qualify for forbearance. You can check the Federal Financial Aid website for specific guidelines.

All of your federal financial aid benefits can be tracked with an account at www.nslds.ed.gov. If you want to see which benefits you might qualify for while searching for nursing grants the Department of Education offers a tool called FAFSA4caster. It is a calculator that can estimate how much you may qualify for in the Pell Grant program. It can also give you an idea of how much you may receive in student loan awards. You can plug in different income amounts to see how your awards can vary.
