after school grantsAfter school tutoring grants are important communities who rely on after school programs to supervise children in the afternoons and early evenings. Unfortunately many programs have had to be creative when solving funding deficits.

There are a variety of after school tutoring grants that city and county agencies can apply for to ensure that children have access to important after school programs.

After school tutoring grants are available to cover costs of equipment, teacher time, and refreshments. In addition to after school tutoring grant opportunities, there are available grants for school clubs such as yearbook, drama, chess and choir. Here is a list of grants for after school tutoring programs.

 1.      State Farm Good Neighbor Citizen Grants

One facet of the Good Neighbor Citizen Grants is Education Excellence. Tutoring programs can apply for this grant online. Funding amounts vary each year.

 2.      Dollar General Literacy Foundation Summer Reading Grants

After school programs need support during the summer months when many programs are open for extended hours. Grants can assist with programs for Pre-K through 12th grade student programs. The Dollar General program focuses on literacy including new readers, struggling readers, and students with learning disabilities.

3.          Learn and Serve

The Learn and Serve America Summer of Service Grant is another option. It is for programs that serve middle school students. There is $1 million in funding available to be split between 5-7 grants. Students in the programs must do a minimum of 100 community service hours.

4.        American Honda Foundation Grants 

This grant funds programs in many areas including technology, science, math, literacy and engineering. Schools can apply online with specific plans for what they would do with the $20,000-$60,000 which is awarded annually.

5.      4-H Youth Development Program

 

The 4-H Youth Development Program is a national organization that works with communities to ensure that children have access to important life lessons through agriculture. The H’s stand for Heads, Hearts, Hands and Health.

6.      Learning Beyond the Classroom Program

Mott Foundation’s Pathways Out of Poverty sponsors the Learning Beyond the Classroom Program. One opportunity is for agencies that develop programs between the school and community which include grants for after school tutoring programs through the U.S. Department of Education.

7.      Americorps

Americacorps has three programs that can be used to fund after school programs. Schools and non-profits in all 50 states have benefitted from the Americorps programs.

  • Americorps VISTA is a volunteer program that staffs programs across the U.S. with committed members who have signed on for at least one year.
  • Americorps NCCC is an intensive 10 month program that staffs service projects with its members.
  • Americorps State and National provides grants for organizations that work with low-income areas in need.

Several states have their own programs to fund after school tutoring grants.

California

  • Oakland, Redwood City, and some schools in San Jose, California can qualify for Barkley Fund after school grants. Each school with students in grades 6-12 can apply for two grants worth up to $2500.  To apply, teachers must sent information about the program in a faxed request to (510) 645-1892.   • After School Education and Safety (ASES) provides after school tutoring grants for California public school programs that serve children K-9th grade. There is a total of $10 million in funding in the program that includes many different types of grants.

Pennsylvania

  • Impact 100 Philadelphia awards numerous grants in an online application process through their website. The review process is extensive and most recently included $242,000 in 5 separate grants. After School Partnerships in Philadelphia received an after school grant in 2002. The first step in the application process is a letter of inquiry.   • Heinz Endowment offers numerous grants, one of which went to the Clairton City School District in the form on an Equity in Education grant for $50000. It is one of the highest after school tutoring grants to be awarded in the area.

Florida

The Rice Family Foundation awards the Guardian of Dreams grants to Catholics schools, including grants for after school tutoring programs. Two Jacksonville, Florida Catholic schools received funding from the program designated for after school programs.

Colorado

The Sound Mind Sound Body program works with schools to promote physical fitness in various parts of the country and plans on expanding to many more states. They provide The After school Grant awards $5000 to supervise students at one of the Sounds Body Sound Mind Fitness Centers.
